Making the jump from generic outcomes to customer use cases

Living in the Northern Rockies, we have the privilege of enjoying all four seasons.  This winter we enjoyed a record snow pack and fantastic ski season, with remnant snow piles still dotting the shady sides of many yards.  Living in this climate every fall we are confronted with a barrage of adds warning us to prepare for the winter ahead.  Everything from protecting pipes and roofs to of course tires for our cars and trucks.  The tagline of ‘winter traction’ is often used in many local adds and it’s left up to us to decipher what that means for us and/or our particular families. Wouldn’t we rather not have white knuckle driving trips to the ski hills, or risk harm by sliding off the highway and being stranded in a winter storm?



In much the same way we at Cisco too often default to generic outcomes that fail to reveal the true value of our technology.  Take our continuous innovations of hardware and software where often times we launch new feature packages that market the new capabilities that customers can utilize.  We often leave it up to our sales and partner reps to connect the dots for our customers.  Two great examples are IOS features such as Segment Routing and Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA).  Both of these are inherent in our IOS code trains and deliver impressive capabilities.  Left alone though – they are just that – features.  We deliver a number of marketing assets, white papers, even hundred plus page Validated Design Guides on the implementation of these technologies.  Our biggest gap is taking these outcomes beyond our standard reduced cost and lower total cost of ownership (TCO) punch lines.

Let’s look at these by themselves.  Segment Routing has been around for quite a while but has recently just come into wider deployments in larger MPLS Networks.  Segment Routing is differentiated by the source calling the shots on the path the traffic needs to follow.  In addition, it can also encode a class of service.  This gives network operators more control of their traffic and often times can be used to reduce latency.  This is all great and points to lowering operating costs…. Again – we are missing the opportunity to bridge these technical outcomes to actual use cases.  How about this: You are a global financial services industry and you are opening a new regional office in the Middle East.  That being said, you are skeptical of any of your traffic passing through specific countries where geopolitical conditions are strained, say Iran or Russia??  With Segment Routing you can accomplish this from your headend in the US and ensure the path your traffic takes with a specific class of service.

Encrypted Traffic Analysis (ETA) was released with much fanfare as part of the new Catalyst 9000 Family.  Again, the ability to monitor and detect potential malware in encrypted packets has a large benefit for any enterprise that is looking for an extra layer of security in their branch and/or campus networks, especially since anything encrypted in the past remained hidden from network operators.  ETA enhances the deployment of Cisco Stealthwatch which also relies on NetFlow data that comes from our routing and switching hardware.  Again – reduced complexity and TCO are the common arguments, but pair this with the scenario above and all of a sudden you have a compelling use case for financial services customers.  You can talk about compliance outcomes or enhanced customer satisfaction among others. Together these features provide a layered security approach that of course helps control costs, but does so much more and we owe it to our customers to take this story to the next level! Big 5G Event - And That’s a Wrap

Well the Big 5G Event in Denver has come to a close for this year. Cisco was the Diamond sponsor at the Big 5G Event in Denver this week. This event is a merger of Light Reading’s Big Communications Event and Informa’s 5G North America. This event focuses the industry conversation on the needs and solutions for 5G. The event began strong with the Leading Lights awards dinner. This was a fun event including “5G Man” and some fun videos about 5G. Light Reading also shared their “hall of fame” video which focused on people who made an impact (or the news) in our industry.

Winning two of the most important Leading Lights awards was Rakuten Mobile whose CTO Tareq Amin carried home awards for the “Most Innovative Telco Cloud Strategy by an operator” and “Most Innovative Automation Strategy by an Operator”. This was also a big win for Cisco as we have a significant role in design, equipping and implementation of this groundbreaking network and its automation. 



As the Diamond sponsor Cisco had the keynote address on the first full day and several panel sessions. Ian Campbell, CTO for Cisco Mobility Business Group, was the keynote speaker on the topic of Monetizing the Instant Network. Aeneas Dodd-Noble, Principal Engineer and Architect also of Cisco’s Mobility Business Group presented on a panel for 5G services in a multi-cloud world. Michael Dennis, Business Development Manager for Cisco Umbrella Security discussed how Umbrella can be monetized. Aeneas also spoke on a panel about public cloud for 5G network functions.

For those who missed this event and the sessions, Ian Campbell’s keynote was “Monetizing the Instant Network – 5G: Addressing the Long Tail”. He addressed the potential for 5G to enable new monetizing opportunities where the mobile operator can help enterprises with their digital transformational needs. These are called the “long tail of 5G use cases” and are not addressable in 4G networks. Ian provided examples of the new enabling capabilities including network as a service, slicing etc. Ian also noted that the Cisco 5G architecture and our broad enterprise eco-system work together to enable 5G monetization.

Aeneas Dodd-Noble held a breakout session  on “5G services in a multi-cloud world”. During this session, Aeneas discussed multi-cloud use cases and how we can leverage 5G software-defined networks to better position services at the edge. How the cloud-native core plays a critical role by positioning key microservices closer to the end user. Applications in the cloud can be hosted on operator- hosted public or self-build virtual infrastructures. Operator functions like user plane and control plane need to move to the public cloud to provide connectivity, unified operation and ease of deployment across hundreds of sites.

Michael Dennis, Business Development Manager for Cisco Umbrella Security, participated on a panel discussing The Truth about AI and Security. He discussed how Cisco Umbrella is a cloud security platform that provides the first line of defense against threats on the internet wherever users go. And because it’s built into the foundation of the internet and delivered from the cloud, Umbrella is the simplest security product to deploy, delivering powerful, effective protection.



Cisco also had a presence on the exhibition floor where our experts demonstrated and discussed 5G solutions for service provider and for enterprise.

Service provider demos included:

  • Cisco 5G Architecture – a cloud-to-client software-defined network that is designed to be open and multi-vendor.
  • Ultra Cloud Core – the industry leading cloud-native 4G/5G mobile core
  • Unified Domain Center – a new cloud-native solution that enables the service provider to give their enterprise customers what is arguably the “5G killer app” – Enablement. The enablement to extend the control to create and manage their LAN across the mobile wide area network.
  • Beyond the City – show use cases from the 5G Rural First project in the UK including autonomous agricultural, ship-to-shore connected experiences and more.
  • Trust and Secured networks – showing how you can assure a secured network from the microchips on up with crypto-keys and knowing your supply chain. That a trusted network is the foundation to a secure network.


Enterprise demos included:

  • The Cisco enterprise 5G roadmap for enterprise WAN connectivity
  • Planned 5G capabilities
  • 4G products with greater than 1Gbps downlink
  • Last mile connectivity use case
  • SD-WAN


Conversations with customers were very engaging and the customers were enthusiastic about what we shared with them. . Our guests included established mobile operators, emerging mobile operators and municipalities interested in what 5G can do for them and how Cisco can help them.

Cisco CDA Advances Spain’s Secure Digital Transformation:


Cisco today announced its commitment to help advance Spain’s secure digital transformation under the company’s Country Digital Acceleration(CDA) program. The CDA program combines partnership and shared investment between Cisco, communities, governments, and businesses to utilizedigital as the foundation for their future. Chuck Robbins, Chairman and CEO, Cisco: “Through Country Digital Acceleration, Cisco has the opportunity to positively impact communities, governments, and businesses around the world. We are excited to support the long-term economic goals of Spain and benefit their citizens in the digital economy.”
Called ‘Digitaliza’ in Spanish, CDA will align with the country’s goals for digitization. It will drive projects that advance citizens’ quality of life, create jobs and workforce education, and enhance global economic competitiveness. It foresees a collaboration with the public sector, the industry -including ICT, energy, finance, industrial companies, service providers, small medium businesses (SMBs), startups from any vertical, and partners- plus academia and will address the following areas: 
  • Industry 4.0: Encourage the digitization of industrial companies, service providers, and utilities. Help close the digital gap for small medium businesses through innovation, with the ultimate goal to increase efficiency and competitiveness.
  • Smart Territories: Advance smart, inclusive, sustainable and attractive digital territories. Furthermore, help enable digital education and connected schools, and develop efficient smart mobility and transportation for people and goods.
